| The recent
"breakthroughs" in Complex
Tunnel Theory, reported at the poster session at UCSD's 2001
Jacobs School of Engineering Research Review, have created quite a
stir here. Please see the treatise on Transgressing the
Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum
Gravity, by Prof. Alan Sokal (published in Social Text in
1996), and Prof. Sokal's in-depth discussion of his hoax in A
Physicist Experiments With Cultural Studies (published in
Lingua Franca the following year), to better appreciate the
implications that such a snow job can be pulled on the scientific
community with relative ease. The text of both articles can be found
here.

| Our most essential and
fundamental freedom, the freedom of expression, is currently under
attack by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), for the
sole reason that they wrote a lousey DVD encription algorithm which
was easy to reverse engineer. The brutish solution which they seek to
minimize their financial losses due to their mistake has sweeping
implications in terms of the interpretation of the First Amendment to
the U.S. Constitution in the electronic age. For an excellent
exposition on this subject, click here. |
